U.S. budget carrier Frontier Airlines has added a new in-flight prompt encouraging passengers to tip cabin crew during drink and snack service.
When purchasing snacks or beverages with a credit card, passengers who sign on the crew’s handheld tablet will see a prompt to add a gratuity. The on-screen options include 15%, 20% and 25%, or passengers can enter a custom amount. There is also an option to decline adding a tip.
Frontier says the tipping prompt was added to its payment system on Jan. 1. Any tips collected on a flight are pooled and distributed among the flight attendants who worked that flight, rather than retained by the airline.
The change formalizes what some travelers have already practiced informally and aims to provide a straightforward way for passengers to express appreciation for onboard service during brief drink and snack offerings on Frontier’s routes.
