Carté Hotel San Diego Downtown: Detailed Review & What to Expect

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: Carté Hotel San Diego Downtown captures a relaxed coastal energy combined with sleek modern design. Located in the heart of San Diego, the hotel feels upscale while remaining unpretentious. During a busy conference weekend the property was fully booked, yet the lobby maintained a calm atmosphere. Staff greeted guests efficiently — an employee opened my taxi door and helped with luggage, ensuring a smooth arrival and quick check-in.

GUEST QUARTERS: I was assigned a room on the 15th floor with direct bay views. As soon as the door opened I pulled back the floor-to-ceiling curtains to let in the sunlight and take in the panorama; individual boats were clearly visible on the water. The room’s palette of gray, white and dark brown tones felt contemporary and comfortable, with a deep teal accent wall behind the bed adding warmth. Thoughtful details like abundant outlets and modern tech — including a large flat-screen TV — made the room both convenient and restful. Between the comfortable bed and the view, it was easy to relax without leaving the room.

The bathroom matched the room’s modern aesthetic. It featured a spacious vanity, dimmable lighting and textured dark walls. The rainfall shower offered generous space and smooth glass partitions for a spa-like experience.

SERVICES/AMENITIES: The hotel offers a variety of amenities that suit both leisure and business travelers. On the 16th floor, Above Ash Social is a rooftop bar with fire pits and sweeping city and bay views — a perfect setting for sunsets and evening gatherings. The bar menu includes creative cocktails and shareable plates; house-made hummus with warm pita was a standout among the small bites. Watercolors Restaurant serves breakfast, poolside brunch and dinner; the passion fruit pancakes I tried were bright and well-balanced, with a tart passion fruit curd that complemented the batter without overpowering it.

Additional on-site options include a terrace pool and the Lido Lounge. Though the pool area was undergoing work during my visit, its elevated position promises an engaging poolside environment when complete. Guests also receive a day pass to Fit Athletic Club on the third floor, which features modern equipment, group fitness classes, and wellness amenities such as a steam room and sauna.
