Heathrow’s (LHR) new Terminal 2, The Queen’s Terminal, is scheduled to open on June 4. United will operate the first flight to arrive at the new facility. The original Terminal 2 opened more than 50 years ago; this modern redevelopment will host 22 Star Alliance member airlines, along with Aer Lingus, Virgin Atlantic Little Red and Germanwings.
Designed by the Spanish architectural practice Luis Vidal + Architects, led by Luis Vidal, The Queen’s Terminal is the result of a five-year, £2.5 billion programme. The development includes the main terminal building, a newly commissioned sculpture by artist Richard Wilson, a 1,340-space car park, an energy centre and a cooling station. A signature undulating steel-framed roof floods the interior with consistent natural light, enhancing the passenger experience. Vidal’s practice is also noted for projects such as Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD) and other aviation designs.
The new Terminal 2 is Heathrow’s most sustainable terminal to date, cutting CO2 emissions by around 40 percent compared with the building it replaces. The project ranks among the largest privately funded construction schemes in the United Kingdom.
