Slow Travel in South Africa: Discover the Great Karoo & Camdeboo Park

Prefer not to rush? South Africa’s Great Karoo invites slow, immersive travel, and the historic town of Robert Sobukwe (formerly Graaff-Reinet) is an ideal base. Surrounded by Camdeboo National Park and the nearby Sneeuberg Mountains, the area offers a wide variety of trails—from gentle botanical strolls to demanding high-altitude ascents. Characterized by vast semi-arid plains and dramatic volcanic columns of igneous rock, this region fittingly bears the name Land of Great Thirst.

Outdoor enthusiasts can fully immerse themselves in the region’s dramatic scenery by hiking or gravel biking. Cyclists may tackle the challenging Ouberg Pass or follow farm roads toward the Owl House in Nieu-Bethesda, where late artist Helen Martins covered interior surfaces with ground glass and created a surreal collection of cement animals—camels, birds, peacocks, pyramids and owls—often assisted by fellow artist Koos Malgas. Now preserved as a provincial heritage site, the Owl House operates as an intriguing museum documenting Martins’s singular artistic vision.

“We are seeing a significant shift in what international travelers seek,” says Tebello Polisane-Casper, general manager of Drostdy Hotel. “It’s no longer enough to view the Karoo from a car window. People want to earn the view. They want dust on their boots and the sun on their faces.”

Hikers can choose from several memorable routes to appreciate the scale of the landscape. The Eerstefontein Day Walk offers opportunities to spot Cape Mountain zebra. The Driekoppe Trail winds through the rugged Sneeuberg terrain, while the Valley of Desolation provides sweeping vistas of the surrounding escarpments. For a dramatic cliff-top experience, the nearly mile-long Crag Lizard Trail traverses the tops of soaring cliffs, revealing panoramic views at every turn.

After a day of exploration, unwind at Drostdy Hotel, a centrally located 5-star retreat with 48 carefully curated guestrooms that reflect classic Cape Dutch style. Guests can relax in the Africology Spa and savor Karoo-inspired dishes at De Camdeboo Restaurant, paired with an excellent selection of South African wines. The hotel blends historic charm with refined comfort, making it an inviting place to rest between adventures.

Whether you’re seeking challenging outdoor pursuits or a relaxed pace to absorb the region’s quiet grandeur, Robert Sobukwe and the surrounding Karoo offer a distinctive travel experience—one best appreciated slowly, on foot or by bike, where every mile reveals another facet of this extraordinary landscape.
