Study Reveals Common Travel Mistakes Professionals Make

A new study by Korn Ferry finds that half of professionals who stay connected to work during vacation end up arguing with their spouse about it.

The same survey shows that staying completely offline while away has become unusual. Nearly half of respondents say they check in with work multiple times a day while on vacation, and only 2 percent say they never check in. About a third of participants even say they enjoy keeping up with the office while they’re away.

“Those who feel they must always be in touch with the office are missing a critical point,” said Mark Royal, senior principal at Korn Ferry. “Professionals who can step away from work demands — even for short periods — will be more engaged and productive over the long term.”

The survey also found that 63 percent of respondents have cut a vacation short because of work demands. Forty-five percent do not plan to use all their vacation time, and 73 percent say they would trade vacation days for a higher salary.

“Clearing the deck for a week off takes planning,” Royal added. “Setting clear expectations, arranging coverage, and agreeing on limited, scheduled check-ins with family and colleagues can make time away more restorative. That helps people focus on the scenery rather than the screen.”
