Yosemite Town Celebrates Annual Tarantula Festival

The small town of Coarsegold, California, celebrates a creature with a fearsome reputation: the tarantula.

Located in the Sierra Nevada foothills near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park, Coarsegold hosts the annual Coarsegold Tarantula Festival. Although tarantulas can look intimidating, they are generally harmless to people and play an important role in the local ecosystem. A key goal of the festival is to educate visitors about these arachnids and encourage respectful, nonlethal treatment.

Held on Oct. 26 to coincide with the tarantulas’ mating season — when they leave their burrows to find partners before retreating for the winter — the festival offers a mix of family-friendly activities and community traditions. Attendees can watch tarantula races, enter hairiest-leg contests for men and women, take part in costume and baking competitions, and enjoy art projects designed for children.

“I’ve had hundreds of people who say they spared the life of a tarantula because of the festival,” said Diane Boland, the event’s founder. “People are reporting they now gently move them from places they’re not wanted, instead of resorting to a shoe or bug spray.”

The festival also provides a chance to learn about tarantula behavior, habitat needs and their role as predators of insects. Organizers and volunteers often give demonstrations and share tips on how to safely and humanely relocate tarantulas when they wander into yards or homes.

Beyond education, the event fosters community spirit and supports local businesses. Vendors, food stalls and craft tables line the festival grounds, offering local goods and seasonal treats. Live music and family activities create a lively atmosphere where both residents and visitors can celebrate a unique aspect of the region’s natural heritage.

For nature lovers and curious visitors, the Coarsegold Tarantula Festival is an opportunity to see these misunderstood spiders up close, learn practical ways to coexist with them, and join in lighthearted competitions and entertainment that highlight local traditions.
