Why Americans Are Choosing Mexico and the Caribbean Over Europe

The top travel destination for Americans this summer is less popular than in previous years but remains the most visited.

According to a report from Allianz Travel Assistance, Cancún has seen a 5 percent decline in U.S. travelers this summer. Despite that drop, it still ranks as the most popular summer destination for American travelers for the third year in a row. Notably, the entire top 10 list this year consists of locations in Mexico and the Caribbean, and major European cities such as London and Paris—previously as high as No. 7—do not appear on the list.

The full international top 10 is made up of Cancún, Aruba, San José del Cabo, Nassau, Higuey, Montego Bay, Providenciales, San Juan, Puerto Vallarta and Grand Cayman. These destinations reflect a strong preference for sun-and-beach vacations among U.S. travelers this season.

Domestically, Orlando holds the top spot for summer travel within the United States, followed by New York, Seattle and Las Vegas. The list highlights continued interest in both classic family-oriented destinations and major urban hubs offering entertainment and attractions.

“Americans are staying closer to home this summer, with all top 10 international destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico for the first time,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications for Allianz Global Assistance USA. He noted that summer often functions as shoulder season across much of the Caribbean and Mexico, creating opportunities for deals and discounts that make travel to nearby tropical destinations especially appealing.

The study was compiled using online airfare systems that offer Allianz Travel Assistance services and reflects booking trends for the summer season.
