Volaris, a Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier, and Frontier Airlines have signed a codeshare agreement, pending approval from authorities in Mexico and the United States. This partnership represents one of the earliest codeshare arrangements between two ultra-low-cost carriers, and it promises to expand budget-friendly travel options across the border.
Under the agreement, Volaris will gain access to U.S. cities it does not yet serve, while Frontier will be able to offer service to Mexican destinations for the first time. The collaboration is expected to broaden connectivity and provide more economical choices for travelers moving between the two countries.
“At Volaris we are thrilled to join Frontier as one of the first ultra-low-cost carriers to enter a codeshare agreement. We estimate that our partnership will add around 20 new destinations to our network and 80 new routes between both Mexico and the United States,” said Enrique Beltranena, CEO of Volaris. He emphasized the role the partnership will play in increasing options while maintaining low fares.
Volaris already serves 24 destinations across Mexico and the United States. Through the codeshare, the airline expects to extend its reach into additional U.S. markets that previously were not part of its route map.
Barry Biffle, president and CEO of Frontier, highlighted the agreement’s potential to make air travel more affordable and accessible. “This agreement will allow us to expand upon our mission to deliver low fares and enable more people to fly,” he said. Biffle noted that many travelers between the United States and Mexico face high ticket prices, and the partnership aims to lower costs for a substantial portion of the populations in both countries.
Both carriers framed the deal as a step toward reconnecting families, friends, and communities on both sides of the border while preserving the ultra-low-cost model that keeps fares competitive. By combining route networks and coordinating schedules, the codeshare is positioned to increase flight frequency and provide more direct connections for passengers.
Once regulatory approvals are secured, customers may see increased booking options, coordinated itineraries, and simplified transfers between Volaris and Frontier flights. The airlines plan to integrate selected routes and schedules to maximize efficiency and ensure that the expanded network serves popular leisure and visiting-family travel demands, as well as business travel where appropriate.
As the partnership develops, both carriers are expected to announce details about specific routes and service start dates. For travelers, the codeshare promises wider access to inexpensive flights across Mexico and the United States while keeping the ultra-low-cost focus on value.
