Virgin Atlantic Launches New Routes to South America

Virgin Atlantic is launching flights to São Paulo (GRU), marking the airline’s first service to South America.

Juha Järvinen, Executive Vice President – Commercial at Virgin Atlantic, said this move begins a new phase of growth for the carrier. “2019 marks the start of a new phase of growth for Virgin Atlantic as we work to become the most loved travel company. São Paulo represents an incredible opportunity for our business and we’re very excited to be flying to a brand new continent for the first time. There are a significant number of corporate customers, and multi-national businesses, located in this powerhouse of South America who can now enjoy the Virgin Atlantic experience on this busy international route,” he said.

Järvinen also highlighted the leisure appeal of São Paulo. “But it’s not all about business — I’m also thrilled to introduce an exciting new destination to our leisure customers. São Paulo boasts numerous cultural institutions such as the Museu de Arte, has a rich architectural history and acts as a gateway for leisure travel within the rest of Brazil and beyond.”

Virgin Atlantic confirmed that tickets for the new route will go on sale later this year, with schedules and pricing to be announced in due course.

Brazil’s government welcomed the development. Marcelo Álvaro Antônio, Minister of Tourism, said the expansion of air connectivity is a national priority to boost Brazil’s competitiveness in global tourism. “This new flight is a great achievement for our country,” he said, noting the potential benefits for inbound tourism and business travel.

The launch underscores growing demand for transatlantic routes linking the UK and Brazil, driven by both commercial ties and leisure travel. São Paulo’s status as an economic and cultural hub makes it a strategic addition to Virgin Atlantic’s network, offering passengers access to business districts, museums, architecture, and onward connections to other Brazilian destinations.

As the carrier prepares to introduce this South American service, travelers and corporate customers can expect a full announcement with flight schedules, cabin options, and fares when sales open later in the year. The route is positioned to enhance connectivity and provide an alternative for passengers seeking direct service between São Paulo and Virgin Atlantic’s existing network.
