It’s officially the month to celebrate chocolate, and Denver’s Museum of Nature & Science presents Chocolate: The Exhibition (Feb. 12–May 8), a rich look at the history, culture and science of cacao. Tracing chocolate’s journey from rainforest staple to luxury commodity, the exhibition explores how cacao was cultivated by indigenous peoples, how Aztecs used cacao seeds for barter, how Mayan nobility enjoyed a ceremonial beverage, and how chocolate evolved into a sweetened drink reserved for Europe’s elite.
The display includes faithful recreations of archaeological drinking vessels from Mayan culture and a full-size cacao tree complete with pods and seeds, giving visitors a clear sense of where chocolate begins. Historic artifacts such as silver and porcelain chocolate servers from Europe, vintage chocolate molds, and 19th- and early 20th-century advertising and packaging show the product’s changing role in society and commerce. Botanical reproductions and panels on sustainable farming practices highlight modern methods used to protect rainforest environments and support growers.
In addition to the museum’s exhibits, there are special events for adults. On Feb. 18, guests 18 and older can attend an evening in the Science Lounge featuring chocolate cocktails, live entertainment, demonstrations, palate-training activities and guided tastings. This themed presentation offers both hands-on learning and sensory experiences designed to deepen appreciation for chocolate’s flavors and cultural significance. The event runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Chocolate: The Exhibition blends history, art and science to tell cacao’s story—from ancient rituals and economic role to botanical origins and contemporary sustainability. Visitors will find opportunities to learn about cultivation and trade, admire finely crafted objects associated with chocolate consumption, and engage with presentations that connect past practices to present-day efforts to grow cacao responsibly. Whether you’re interested in culinary history, anthropology, conservation or simply enjoy chocolate, the exhibition provides a thoughtful, immersive experience.
Plan your visit to coincide with the special evening programs or explore the exhibit during regular museum hours to see detailed displays and interactive elements that explain chocolate’s journey across continents and centuries. The Museum of Nature & Science offers a comprehensive look at how an agricultural product from tropical forests came to influence cuisine, commerce and culture around the world.
