Urban Shade: Showcasing Israel’s Innovative City Canopies

Presented by Design Museum Holon, the Beracha Foundation and the Municipality of Holon, a three-year research project focused on shading public spaces has concluded and is now on display. Culminating in an invitation-only design competition, the exhibition “Urban Shade in Israel” presents the winning proposals in a new installation at Design Museum Holon, located south of Tel Aviv.

The project explored practical and scalable ways to introduce shade into urban environments, attracting submissions from architects and designers in Israel and abroad. Holon served as the study area, and entries were evaluated for their potential to encourage sustained public use, their structural and industrial feasibility, social impact, and contribution to the urban fabric.

The exhibition highlights a range of design strategies, from lightweight modular structures to integrated green solutions, each aimed at improving comfort, usability and climate resilience in outdoor public spaces. By demonstrating how thoughtful design can combine aesthetics with functionality and durability, the installation offers practical models that municipalities and designers can adapt to different contexts.

Beyond showcasing prototypes and models, the display emphasizes research findings on materials, maintenance, and user interaction—factors that determine whether a shading solution will be adopted and maintained over time. The project’s interdisciplinary approach brings together design, engineering and urban planning perspectives, underlining the importance of collaboration in creating public infrastructure that meets local needs.

Visitors to the museum can study detailed plans and mock-ups, learn about performance testing, and see examples of how shade can be woven into existing streetscapes, plazas and transit stops. The exhibition also inspires discussion about policy and implementation—how cities might prioritize shade as a public good and integrate it into long-term urban strategies.

“Urban Shade in Israel” offers a timely contribution to conversations about urban comfort and climate adaptation, providing replicable ideas that respond to both local conditions and broader global challenges. The installation at Design Museum Holon provides a concise, research-based presentation of solutions that encourage public engagement and sustainable use of outdoor spaces.
