Tutka Bay Lodge: Wildlife, Scenic Views and Wellness Retreat in Alaska

Within the Wild Adventure Company, a family-run wilderness hospitality company in Alaska, is unveiling an expanded vision for its guest experiences. Now celebrating 40 years in south-central Alaska under founders Carl and Kirsten Dixon, the multi-generation team is enhancing offerings at its Tutka Bay Lodge with new adventure and wellness programs and a luxury-minded collection of hospitality services that build on its strong Alaskan reputation.

Joining the company’s Homer, Alaska portfolio, which already includes La Baleine Café, is Danish Daughter Flower Farm, a peony and vegetable operation. The farm will supply fresh produce and flowers for the lodge’s kitchen, support intimate farm-to-table dining experiences and host cooking classes that give guests hands-on culinary learning with local ingredients.

Complementing these hospitality additions is the Dixons’ nonprofit, the Be the Wild Stewardship Project, which strengthens the company’s commitment to protecting local lands, maritime ecosystems and Alaska Native culture. These stewardship initiatives are designed to preserve wild places while enriching community life and guest understanding of the region’s cultural and ecological heritage.

A notable addition for 2023 is Tutka Bay Lodge’s 18-passenger catamaran, The Lightning, which operates wildlife and sightseeing tours across Kachemak Bay. These excursions bring guests close to marine life—humpback whales, sea otters and a variety of shorebirds—and offer memorable sunset cruises where guests relax under blankets and enjoy grilled s’mores and handcrafted desserts as the sun sets behind Mount Augustine, Mount Redoubt and Mount Iliamna.

The lodge also offers an Oyster Farm Tour that explains oyster cultivation from seed to market and includes a floating raw bar experience where guests can shuck and savor freshly grilled oysters. The vessel provides transport for visits to nearby points of interest such as Flat Islands and Seldovia Village, where guests can browse local galleries and shops.

For backcountry enthusiasts, Tutka Bay Lodge programs include climbing, hiking and mountain biking adventures that access upper bowls and alpine ridgelines. For a standout day trip, guests can be transported by helicopter, boat or plane across the Gulf of Alaska to Augustine Volcano. The volcanic island’s moon-like landscape and active vents create a rare, dramatic setting for guided exploration and biking excursions.

June’s annual salmon run offers prime fishing and wildlife viewing as hundreds of thousands of fish move inland to spawn. Guests can fly to a private beach near Katmai National Park for fly fishing or take a short flight to explore glaciers and coastal scenery in Kenai Fjords National Park. Options include fishing, hiking, guided kayaking, paddle boarding and even glacier jet skiing for those seeking varied marine and wilderness experiences.

The Tutka Bay Lodge property includes six deluxe cabins and a welcoming main lodge that houses a cozy gathering space for pre-dinner appetizers, dining, games and a library with a nature nook. The main lodge is also the hub where guests register for daily activities and wellness sessions.

Wellness is woven into the lodge’s culture. Daily outdoor yoga, forest and ocean meditation, and guided breath walks offer guests chances for stillness and reflection. Kayaking or paddle boarding can be incorporated into floating treatments, while forest bathing and guided hikes in old-growth rainforest or nearby Kachemak Bay State Park let guests immerse themselves in restorative nature practices.

Sound bathing and full-body listening experiences are offered to support therapeutic and restorative benefits for mind and body. The lodge’s Wilderness Tea Lounge invites guests to gather herbs and berries to brew healing teas that pair well with hot-and-cold water therapy sessions or herb-and-salt scrubs.

The lodge’s culinary programs are led by Kirsten Dixon and her daughter Mandy, both award-winning chefs and cookbook authors. Danish Daughter Farm produces more than 60,000 peony blooms along with herbs and vegetables that complement on-site gardens, local farms and foraging—supporting a seasonal, sustainable dining program. During Homer’s Annual Peony Celebration in July, the farm opens for tours and hosts intimate meals served among the fields, prepared by guest chefs.

Tutka Bay Lodge’s summer season runs June 1–September 30. Rates begin at $8,415 per person for a three-night stay that includes two off-site adventures, all meals, guided activities and gear, wellness and cooking classes, wine pairings and other lodge amenities. The two-lodge adventure option between Tutka Bay Lodge and Winterlake Lodge remains available, and full-property buyouts can be arranged starting at $126,000 for three nights.
