The Waldorf Hilton London: Luxury Hotel Near Covent Garden

Arrival/Check-in: Arriving a little after noon on a Saturday with our luggage in tow, we were greeted by a helpful bellman who assisted with the bags and opened the wheelchair-accessible entrance of this century-old Edwardian property. Inside, a compact elevator took me up to the check-in desk. Because our arrival was early, the room was not yet ready, but the staff promptly tagged our luggage and we set off to explore nearby Covent Garden.

Guest Quarters: When we returned shortly after 3 p.m., we were escorted to an executive room on the second floor. Given the building’s age, the room pleasantly surprised us with its spacious, modern layout and thoughtful wheelchair-accessible modifications. The bathroom featured a separate glass-enclosed shower and a private toilet, while a sink with mirror functioned as a dressing vanity. A contemporary glass chandelier hung above the king-sized bed. Large windows offered a street view and blackout curtains ensured a peaceful night’s sleep. The room was finished with a desk, a wall-mounted flat-screen TV and a day divan—comfortable and well-appointed for both relaxation and work.

Services/Amenities: We spent a pleasant afternoon in the Executive Lounge, which was busy with guests enjoying afternoon tea. While spreading clotted cream on our scones and reading The Times, our son checked email on the lounge computer. The staff was attentive, promptly refilling beverages, and the atmosphere was relaxed—several families nearby were playing cards. Guests should note the fitness center’s early closing time: it closes at 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and at 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays, as the facility is operated by a nearby LA Fitness Club. The business center, by contrast, is open 24 hours and provides fax service, computers, a copier, and rental cellphones and projectors. For dining, the Homage Grand Salon Restaurant evokes the feel of Europe’s grand cafés and is an excellent option for pre- or post-theatre meals.

The Experience: Situated between the Aldwych Theatre and the Novello Theatre, the Waldorf places guests squarely in the heart of London’s theatre district. Theatre-goers will appreciate the convenience: more than a dozen performance venues lie within a 15-minute walk, making it an ideal base for an evening out.
