TAP Air Portugal Unveils New 2019 Routes and Flight Destinations

TAP Air Portugal has announced two new nonstop routes to the United States. Beginning next June, the airline will launch service between Lisbon (LIS) and both Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Washington, D.C. (IAD). Each route will operate five weekly round-trip flights.

The Chicago schedule will run Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Flights depart Chicago at 6:05 p.m. and arrive in Lisbon at 7:50 a.m. the following morning. The return service departs Lisbon at 1:05 p.m. and arrives at O’Hare at 4:05 p.m.

Flights between Washington, D.C. and Lisbon will operate Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Westbound service leaves Washington at 10:40 p.m., arriving in Lisbon at 10:50 a.m. the next day. Eastbound flights depart Lisbon at 4:30 p.m., arriving in the U.S. at 7:40 p.m.

David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue Airways and a major shareholder in TAP, emphasized that these routes are part of a broader expansion. “With more than 70 new planes on the way, this is only just the beginning,” he said. Neeleman noted TAP’s growing transatlantic footprint, including an extensive network beyond Lisbon: the airline now serves 55 destinations in Europe and 17 in Africa. He added that roughly half of TAP’s American travelers continue onward beyond Portugal, often taking advantage of the carrier’s Portugal Stopover program.

The Portugal Stopover program lets travelers spend up to five nights in Lisbon or Porto at no extra airfare before continuing to another European or African destination. Participating local partners provide stopover guests with hotel savings, complimentary experiences and other benefits, making it easier to explore Portugal as part of a longer itinerary.
