Sydney Airport is piloting new biometric technology in collaboration with Qantas that enables passengers to check in, drop off luggage, board aircraft, and access lounges through automated facial recognition systems.
Described by Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert as the most extensive trial of its kind to date, the initiative is part of the airport’s strategy to create a seamless “couch-to-boarding gate” facial recognition journey. Future trials may extend to include mobile check-in and automated border processing.
“In the future, there will be no more juggling passports and bags at check-in or searching through pockets and smartphones for boarding passes — your face will be your passport and your boarding pass at every step of the process,” Culbert said.
Vanessa Hudson, Qantas chief customer officer, noted that the technology will not only permit passengers to check in for flights but will also be available to lounge staff to deliver a more personalized arrival experience.
The current trial is being used with Qantas customers on selected international flights while the partners evaluate performance, passenger experience, and operational impacts.
