Stay at Sojourner Inn: Charming Boutique Hotel in [City]

Arrival/Check-in: When I arrived I was warmly greeted by the owner, Pat Azinger, who personally showed me around his historic boutique inn. The building dates back to 1891 and the original certificate, framed and hung on the wall, attests to its long history. (20/20)

Guest Quarters: My Serengeti Suite was richly and authentically themed. Azinger collected many furnishings during his travels to Kenya, South Africa and other African countries, and the room reflects that care. Handmade furniture, hand-carved masks and animal sculptures are thoughtfully arranged throughout the spacious living area. A first edition of Out of Africa sits between elephant bookends, complementing generous, comfortable seating. The suite includes a fully equipped kitchen with zebra-themed accents—from cabinet knobs to placemats and dishes. The large bathroom features coordinated animal details, tasteful African artwork and a terrarium wall. The bedroom is especially inviting: an antique four-poster bed draped with netting and an African chest at the foot create a distinctive atmosphere. The bedroom opens onto a private terrace with a hammock beside the swimming pool, which is fed by the town’s famous 87-degree natural hot springs. Two other suites in the inn—Rustic Ranch and Wilderness Retreat—are decorated with the same attention to detail and offer modern comforts. Throughout the property, original crown moldings and period architectural details preserve the building’s historic character. (15/15)

Services/Amenities: The Sojourner Inn is well suited to travelers who plan to explore the Black Hills and use the inn as a comfortable base. The layout and amenities favor self-sufficient stays—guests can prepare meals after shopping at the nearby market—but the inn is also within walking distance of restaurants, bars, nature trails, parks, a fitness facility and the town’s geothermal hot springs. It is ideal for visitors who prefer a quiet atmosphere and do not require daily room service. Additionally, the property operates four cabins for rent on a nearby ranch, offering guests more options for accommodations. (38/45)

The Experience: Among many hotel stays over the years, this inn stands out for the authenticity and inspiration of its African theme. The distinctive furnishings and the personal hospitality of the owner combined to make the stay memorable and unique. (20/20)
