As part of its plan to revive and signature Luxury Collection hotels across Europe, Starwood Hotels & Resorts is undertaking a substantial renovation and expansion of the Sheraton Algarve Hotel at Pine Cliffs Resort in Portugal. The project will be carried out in several phases, beginning this November during the hotel’s low season.
The initial phase, scheduled for completion in the spring/summer 2015 season, focuses on refreshing the guestrooms and public spaces while expanding the resort’s offerings. The upgrade will add 78 new suites, introduce an Italian restaurant, create a dedicated spa, and build an underground parking facility to improve guest convenience. Subsequent work will continue through a second phase starting in winter 2015, with final renovations planned for the winter 2016 season.
This renovation of the Sheraton Algarve aligns with recent restorations across The Luxury Collection, which have included notable properties such as the Prince de Galles in Paris, Hotel Bristol in Vienna, and The Gritti Palace in Venice. Taken together, these projects reflect a broader effort to preserve historic character while modernizing facilities and amenities to meet contemporary guest expectations.
The phased approach seeks to minimize disruption to guests and to allow the resort to remain partially operational while improvements are completed. By staggering the work across off-peak periods, the hotel can undertake major construction and refurbishment without fully closing, maintaining service for visitors and preserving local employment.
Among the anticipated benefits are enhanced accommodation options through the suite expansion, a strengthened culinary offering with the new Italian restaurant, and a wellness-oriented guest experience via the spa. The underground parking will address practical needs for visitors arriving by car, improving access and convenience for both short-stay and long-stay guests.
For Pine Cliffs Resort and the surrounding Algarve region, the renovation is expected to reinforce the destination’s appeal to international travelers seeking upscale beachfront resorts. Upgraded facilities and new amenities should help the property compete more effectively within Europe’s luxury hospitality market, attracting repeat visitors and new clientele alike.
While the schedule targets phased completion by winter 2016, timing may be adapted as the project progresses to ensure high-quality finishes and careful preservation of the resort’s character. The investment underscores Starwood’s broader commitment to restoring and elevating key Luxury Collection properties across Europe, blending heritage and modern comfort to meet changing guest expectations.
