Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced that The King George in Athens has joined its Luxury Collection after a three-month renovation. Originally opened in 1936, the hotel occupies a prime spot on historic Syntagma Square in the heart of Athens’ elegant golden quarter. The property blends classical architecture with updated interiors and offers 59 guestrooms and 43 suites, along with a welcoming lobby, a restaurant, and a newly renovated ballroom capable of hosting up to 400 guests.
The King George’s addition to the Luxury Collection reinforces Starwood’s presence in Greece. Paul James, global brand leader for The Luxury Collection, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and W Hotels Worldwide, commented that Greece remains among the world’s most captivating destinations and that the King George offers guests a distinctive way to experience Athens. With this opening, Starwood now operates 11 hotels and resorts across Greece, eight of which belong to The Luxury Collection brand.
Visitors to The King George can expect a refined stay that reflects Athens’ cultural and historical richness while benefiting from contemporary comforts introduced during the renovation. The ballroom’s upgrade makes the hotel a versatile venue for social events and conferences, and the mix of rooms and suites provides options for both leisure and business travelers.
Located steps from major landmarks, dining, shopping, and cultural attractions, The King George is well positioned for guests who want to explore the city on foot. The hotel’s central address on Syntagma Square places it within easy reach of museums, historic sites, and government buildings, making it suited to both short city breaks and longer stays.
The renovation prioritized guest experience, with refreshed public spaces and accommodations designed to preserve the hotel’s historic character while introducing modern amenities. The on-site restaurant and lobby areas have been refined to enhance comfort and service, supporting a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere that complements the hotel’s overall aesthetic.
Starwood’s expanded portfolio in Greece signals the company’s continued investment in the region’s hospitality market. By incorporating storied properties like The King George into The Luxury Collection, Starwood aims to offer travelers authentic and memorable stays that highlight each hotel’s local context and heritage.
