Share United Airlines Miles with Family and Friends: How It Works

As you plan winter travel, United Airlines has introduced MileagePlus miles pooling, a feature that lets members combine miles into a shared account for easier redemptions. Groups of up to five people can now contribute and redeem miles from one linked pool. United is the first major U.S. airline to offer this option, and any MileagePlus member — whether family or close friends — can join a pool together.

MileagePlus miles pooling simplifies group travel, making it easier for families and travel companions to book trips together. There is no minimum age to be a MileagePlus member, so even younger family members can participate and add miles to the pool.

How MileagePlus miles pooling works:

  • Any MileagePlus member aged 18 or older can become the pool leader and create a pool for free on united.com.
  • Pool leaders may invite up to four other MileagePlus members of any age to join the pool, including family and friends.
  • Once logged in, members are guided through adding miles to the pool and redeeming pooled miles for award flights on United and United Express.
  • There is no limit on the number of miles that can be contributed to an active miles pool.
  • Pooled miles can be used to book award travel via United.com or the United mobile app.

“We’re always looking for new ways to provide the most value to all of our loyalty members and are proud to be the first major U.S. airline to allow our members to pool their miles with their loved ones and friends,” said Luc Bondar, chief operating officer, MileagePlus. “MileagePlus miles pooling further reinforces United’s position as the leader in family and group travel and gives our members more flexibility to use their miles while making it easier to connect to the destinations and moments that matter most, with the people that matter most.”

Contributing miles to a pool does not change an individual’s Premier status. Only the member who travels on a ticket purchased with pooled miles will earn eligible Premier qualifying points (PQP). Other benefits and balances that cannot be pooled include PQP, Premier qualifying flights (PQF), PlusPoints, and TravelBank cash.
