Damage from the Kaikoura earthquake forced New Zealand’s popular KiwiRail Coastal Pacific train to pause operations for two years. This December marks the return of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer season and the resumption of service along the South Island’s scenic east coast.
The Coastal Pacific runs between Christchurch and Picton, winding through a striking landscape that alternates between coastline and high mountains. Over the roughly six-hour journey, passengers travel through 22 tunnels and cross 175 bridges. The train operates daily throughout the summer, with service extending into late April. Morning departures leave from Christchurch, while return services depart Picton in the afternoon.
