Scandinavian Airlines – SAS is expanding its transatlantic network in 2016 with three new nonstop routes to the United States. The additions will link Los Angeles (LAX) with Stockholm (ARN), Miami (MIA) with Oslo (OSL), and Miami with Copenhagen (CPH), strengthening year-round connectivity between Scandinavia and North America.
In addition to the three new routes, SAS plans to increase frequencies on several existing long-haul services. Flights from Stockholm to New York (JFK) and to Chicago (ORD) will see more departures, and the Copenhagen–Shanghai (PVG) service will also operate with increased frequency. These capacity enhancements reflect SAS’s strategy to offer more options and better schedules for both business and leisure travelers between Scandinavia and major global hubs.
Los Angeles – Stockholm (LAX–ARN)
The new nonstop service between Stockholm and Los Angeles is scheduled to begin on March 14, 2016. SAS will operate daily flights during the summer season to serve peak travel demand, while winter schedules will offer five or six weekly departures. This route provides a convenient direct connection between southern California and the Swedish capital, appealing to tourists, business travelers, and those visiting family and friends.
Miami – Oslo and Miami – Copenhagen (MIA–OSL, MIA–CPH)
SAS will also introduce daily nonstop flights between Scandinavia and Miami in the fall of 2016. Both Oslo–Miami and Copenhagen–Miami services are planned to operate with daily departures, offering year-round access to Florida’s leisure and business markets. Miami’s status as a major gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean makes these routes attractive for connecting traffic as well as point-to-point travelers.
Increased Frequencies to New York, Chicago and Shanghai
Alongside new city pairs, SAS will add capacity on high-demand transatlantic and intercontinental routes. Stockholm–New York (JFK) and Stockholm–Chicago (ORD) will see more departures, improving schedule flexibility for passengers traveling between Sweden and the United States. SAS will also increase service between Copenhagen and Shanghai (PVG), reinforcing its network across Asia and supporting stronger trade and tourism links.
Benefits for Passengers
These route additions and frequency increases aim to deliver several tangible benefits to travelers: more daily options and convenient flight times, improved connectivity for business and leisure itineraries, and shorter total travel times thanks to nonstop service. Frequent flyers and those connecting through SAS’s hubs in Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm can expect better onward connections to regional destinations across Scandinavia.
The 2016 expansion underscores SAS’s commitment to growing its long-haul network while providing reliable year-round service between Scandinavia and key global markets. As schedules are finalized, passengers should check SAS’s official timetable and booking channels for exact flight days, departure times and aircraft types.
