Santo Domingo: Top Affordable Caribbean City for Budget Travelers

A recent survey by TravelMag.com found that Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic is the most affordable Caribbean destination among 30 popular locations evaluated. The study focused on double guestrooms rated three stars and above during February, a peak travel month in the region. To ensure relevancy, only hotels and resorts with generally positive guest reviews and desirable locations were included.

The survey reported rates in Santo Domingo starting as low as $43 per night. By comparison, Punta Cana, also in the Dominican Republic, ranked fourth with prices beginning around $87 per night. At the high end of the spectrum, St. Barts was the most expensive destination in the survey, with an average cost near $324 per night for a double guestroom at a three-star property.

Breaking out the extremes, the five most expensive destinations—ranked from highest to lowest—were: St. Barts, Anguilla, St. Martin, Providenciales (Turks and Caicos), and Grand Cayman. The five most affordable destinations—listed from most to least budget-friendly—were: Bonaire, Punta Cana, St. Vincent, Willemstad (Curacao), and Santo Domingo.

The findings highlight the range of pricing across the Caribbean, showing that travelers can often find budget-friendly urban options like Santo Domingo as well as higher-priced island resorts. For visitors planning travel in high season, these comparisons can help set expectations for accommodation budgets and guide decisions about where to stay based on cost and guest satisfaction.
