Rome EDITION Hotel: Luxury Conversion of a 1940s Italian Bank

It is hard to resist the charms of Rome, a city overflowing with world-class paintings and sculptures, countless colorful cafés and hundreds of ancient buildings still in daily use as homes, offices and museums. Rome is the cradle of much that defines Italy, and new hotels here often connect themselves to the city’s rich history, art and culinary tradition. When the Rome EDITION opened last year, it felt like a natural fit for a city that celebrates the extraordinary.

Conceived through a collaboration between renowned entrepreneur Ian Schrager and Marriott International, the 91-room Rome EDITION—featuring 17 suites—focuses on refined design and meticulous attention to detail. Since opening, the hotel has drawn both visitors and locals to its striking public areas, culinary venues and meeting spaces. Situated just off Via Veneto, one of Rome’s most vibrant streets, the hotel sits within easy reach of major attractions such as Piazza Barberini, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and the Borghese Gardens.

Housed in a 1940s building that once served as an Italian bank, the property preserves many of its original architectural elements. The structure, designed by Cesare Pascoletti and Marcello Piacentini, showcases a dramatic central staircase carved from rare cipollino marble sourced from the Apuane quarries. Courtyards, statues and original lighting fixtures were carefully retained to honor the building’s heritage.

Rome EDITION offers a varied mix of amenities: three bars, a rooftop lounge with a bar and plunge pool, a show-kitchen restaurant, a wellness area with a gym and treatment rooms, and a tranquil courtyard garden. All rooms and suites reflect the EDITION aesthetic—muted palettes, walnut accents and custom-designed furnishings—providing a calm, contemporary base for exploring the city.

Paola Colucci leads the hotel’s culinary program as head chef. Recognized among Rome’s top chefs, she emphasizes the emotional connection of food and the value of engaging with guests. Her open-front kitchen at the signature restaurant Anima is screened with warm ambered glass. Alongside her longtime partner Chiara Magliocchetti and Colucci’s daughters, Alice and Flaminia Spognetta, the female-led team presents a menu that balances tradition with subtle modernity—dishes include the chef’s take on spaghetti with roasted tomatoes, veal with tuna sauce, and simple preparations like tomato and burrata. The light-filled dining room, furnished in chartreuse and blue upholstery, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

A generous, planted garden functions as both piazza and dining terrace, forming a distinctive Roman streetscape that spills into the hotel’s interior. With more than 400 plants and jasmine cascading over the façade, the garden creates a serene outdoor room. One side provides al fresco seating for Anima while the opposite side hosts a relaxed all-day terrace serving light dishes throughout the day and into the evening.

The hotel lobby, with soaring 22-foot ceilings and porous travertine floors and walls, feels like a gallery in its own right. On the ground floor are two distinctive bars: Punch Room and Jade Bar. Punch Room is an award-winning speakeasy-style concept that echoes the atmosphere of other EDITION properties. Jade Bar is an intimate mixology destination tailored for cocktail aficionados, where advanced techniques and seasonal ingredients produce a rotating palette of inventive drinks. The space is finished with green antique marble and satin brass accents, creating a jewel-like ambiance.

Perched on the seventh floor, the rooftop offers sweeping city views, a spacious bar and a travertine plunge pool. Here, Chef Colucci presents raw and cooked dishes influenced by the Mediterranean, making the roof a scenic spot for both daytime relaxation and evening dining.
