Faces streaked with white silica mud, we look like a troupe of mimes—only noisier. We laugh and splash in the warm, cerulean water, then drift toward the swim-up bar where steam curls around us and we order a bright blue cocktail.
The Blue Lagoon is Iceland’s best-known geothermal spa, conveniently located about 45 minutes from Reykjavík and roughly 20 minutes from Keflavík International Airport, making it an ideal day trip or stopover for travelers.
The water’s milky-blue hue comes from a unique blend of minerals, silica and algae. Guests often scoop a handful of the silica-rich mud from pots beside the pools and smooth it across their skin as a natural exfoliant and mask.
Set against dark lava rock, the lagoon reaches about 5.2 feet at its deepest point. Water temperatures typically range from 98 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a comfortably warm bathing experience year-round. In addition to soaking, visitors can book spa treatments or enjoy food and drink at the on-site restaurant and café.
The facility remains open throughout the year. A recent redesign and expansion added a new skincare bar and increased lagoon space to accommodate more in-water body treatments. Construction related to further development, including a planned luxury hotel with additional guest rooms, has been staged to minimize impact on guests while enhancing future amenities.
