Rainbow Waltz in Vienna: A Gay Travel Guide to the City of Music

Vienna’s celebrated ball season has returned, and this year the LGBT community is staging a series of spectacular events. On Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, the popular Kreativball presents the theme “Australia/Oceania – Sailor, Stop Dreaming,” promising creative costumes and lively entertainment. The Rainbow Ball takes place on Feb. 22 at the Parkhotel Schönbrunn. A grand evening of formal dress and dancing, the Rainbow Ball supports HOSI (Homosexuelle Initiative) Wien, with proceeds contributing to the organization’s work.

On Feb. 27 the Rosenball will be held at the Palais Auersperg. While the night leans toward disco energy rather than a strict waltz, it traditionally opens with a Polonaise, and attendees typically dress to impress—glamour is part of the experience. The Rosenball occurs the same evening as the more formal Opera Ball at the State Opera House, and for many guests attending the Rosenball is also a statement of solidarity and identity. Tickets often sell out well in advance, so plan accordingly.

These events showcase Vienna’s vibrant nightlife and the diversity of its cultural calendar. Whether you prefer themed creativity, a formal fundraising gala, or high-energy dancing, the ball season offers memorable nights for visitors and locals alike. Dress codes vary by event, but elegance and individuality are always encouraged. Advance booking is recommended to secure a place at the city’s most sought-after parties.
