Housed in a handsome Italian Renaissance building that once contained J.B. Mosby Dry Goods Store, the Quirk Hotel in Richmond, Virginia, opened in the structure originally designed by the respected New York firm Starret and Van Vleck in 1916. Nestled in the heart of the city’s arts and design district, the hotel blends historic character with contemporary style.
The lobby serves as Quirk Gallery, exhibiting works by local artists and creating an art-forward welcome for guests. Artwork is also featured inside each of the 74 guestrooms and suites, creating a consistent creative theme throughout the property. Many original architectural details remain, including maple and pine hardwood floors and large windows that fill rooms with natural light. Designers repurposed elements of the original building—beds incorporate reclaimed floor joists—and bespoke furnishings add modern comfort while honoring the hotel’s heritage.
Maple & Pine, the hotel’s signature restaurant led by executive chef David Dunlap, emphasizes seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and a balance of rich, roasted and savory flavors. The menu highlights partnerships with nearby farmers and food artisans and showcases thoughtful flavor combinations, such as almond-crusted lamb with pickled blueberries and lavender hummus or a vanilla olive oil cake paired with rose custard and inventive apple preparations. The restaurant was recognized locally as one of Richmond’s notable new dining destinations.
In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner service, Maple & Pine offers a popular weekend brunch featuring items like buckwheat pancakes served with hickory syrup and sassafras whipped cream. The dining program’s focus on regional ingredients and creative preparations makes it a draw for both hotel guests and local diners.
The Quirk Hotel’s mix of preserved historic features, contemporary design touches, and an active commitment to local art and cuisine positions it as a cultural hub in Richmond’s arts district. Guests can expect light-filled guest rooms, thoughtful design details, and a restaurant program that highlights the best of the surrounding food community.
