Qatar Expands Its National Fleet: New Ships and Aircraft Plans

Qatar Airways has announced a major fleet expansion with an order for 50 Boeing 777X aircraft and purchase rights for an additional 50 planes — the largest single aircraft commitment in the airline’s history. Production is expected to begin in 2017, with first deliveries planned for 2020. The 777X incorporates advanced technologies, including the GE9X engine from GE Aviation and a new high-efficiency composite wing that provides greater span and improved performance compared with the current 777.

“Qatar Airways continuously builds upon its successful fleet program, and this latest announcement demonstrates our investment in quality equipment to deliver our signature 5-star service,” said Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways. “The Boeing 777 is a key component of our fleet and we look forward to building on this with the next-generation 777-9X.”

The carrier currently operates a fleet of 134 aircraft, serving 144 business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America. This order supports Qatar Airways’ strategy to modernize and expand capacity while maintaining operational efficiency and passenger comfort.

By selecting the 777X family, Qatar Airways aims to benefit from fuel efficiency gains, lower operating costs and improved cabin environments made possible by larger windows, quieter engines and advanced aerodynamics. The composite wing design and state-of-the-art engines are intended to reduce fuel burn and emissions, aligning with industry trends toward more sustainable long-haul operations.

Expanding the fleet also positions Qatar Airways to increase route frequency, introduce new long-haul services and enhance connectivity across its global network. The airline’s investment in next-generation widebody aircraft reflects continued confidence in long-term demand for premium international travel and cargo services.
