Qatar Airways Upgrades Aircraft on Melbourne Route: What to Expect

Qatar Airways will begin operating Airbus A380 aircraft on its daily Melbourne (MEL) route from June 30, upgrading the current Boeing 777-300 service. The move increases capacity and introduces the carrier’s flagship cabin products to the route.

The A380s deployed on the Melbourne sector feature 517 seats, representing a 44% increase in capacity compared with the previous aircraft. Each A380 includes eight first-class suites and 48 business-class seats arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, offering direct aisle access for all business-class passengers.

On the schedule, the westbound flight departs Doha (DOH) at 20:50 and arrives in Melbourne at 17:20 the following day, with a scheduled block time of just over 13 hours. The return leg leaves Melbourne at 22:05 and lands in Doha at 05:25 the next morning, with a block time of approximately 14 hours and 20 minutes.

Melbourne was Qatar Airways’ first Australian destination when the airline launched services there in 2009. Since then, the route has grown in importance, prompting the carrier to introduce larger aircraft to meet rising demand.

Qatar Airways’ chief executive Akbar Al Baker said the airline had identified a clear need for additional capacity on the Melbourne service and was pleased to bring the A380 to the city after seven years of operations. The deployment will enable the airline to offer more premium space and improved onboard amenities to travellers on this long-haul corridor.

The A380 upgrade reflects broader trends in long-haul aviation, where airlines respond to passenger demand and market growth by introducing higher-capacity equipment. For Melbourne travellers, the A380 means more seats across all cabins and expanded opportunities to experience Qatar Airways’ premium products on a daily service.
