Outrigger OZONE: Coral Conservation Initiative Protecting Reefs

Outrigger Resorts has launched a new conservation pledge called OZONE (Outrigger’s Zone), aiming to restore the equivalent of a “football field worth of coral.” Announced during World Oceans Month, this initiative focuses on improving coral health and resilience in the waters around Outrigger’s popular beach destinations.

With more than 60 percent of the world’s coral reefs facing immediate threats, Outrigger is partnering with conservation organizations to protect and restore reef habitats in tropical locations around the globe. Coral reefs are among the planet’s most valuable ecosystems, supporting food security, coastal protection, and tourism—contributions that amount to billions of dollars in environmental and economic benefits.

“OZONE is an action plan that charts a clear course for Outrigger to make a positive impact in helping to save and protect coral reefs and ultimately the wellness of waters around the world,” said Bitsy Kelley, vice president of corporate communications for Outrigger Enterprises Group. Kelley, a lifelong surfer, swimmer and snorkeler, emphasized the company’s commitment of resources and its collaboration with key conservation partners to address this urgent issue.

The idea for OZONE was inspired by Geoffrey Shaw, former owner of Castaway Island, Fiji Resort and chairman of the Mamanuca Environment Society, an organization dedicated to safeguarding the marine and terrestrial environments of Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands. Thanks to this vision, guests at participating Outrigger properties—such as Castaway Island Resort—will have the opportunity to take part in coral planting activities and other hands-on restoration efforts.

“More than 500 million people worldwide depend on coral reefs, so it’s our responsibility to help secure their future,” Kelley added. “Coral grows slowly, and the time to act is now.”

Beyond restoration work, OZONE aims to raise awareness about the condition of coral reef systems while enriching the guest experience through education and engagement. Visitors can learn about the program through in-room videos and on-property lectures, and those staying at participating resorts can join coral-planting events and other interactive conservation activities.

By combining guest participation, education, and partnerships with conservation experts, Outrigger’s OZONE initiative seeks to make measurable improvements to reef health and resilience while fostering a deeper appreciation for the oceans that sustain coastal communities and the travel experiences they support.
