Norwegian Launches New Transatlantic Routes Between U.S. and Europe

Norwegian has announced non-stop service from New York’s JFK to Athens (ATH) and from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Barcelona (BCN) for the 2019 summer schedule.

The New York–Athens route will begin on June 7, and the Chicago–Barcelona route on July 2. Both services will operate four times weekly on Boeing 787 Dreamliners through October 26.

With these additions, the low-cost carrier will offer non-stop flights to 13 European destinations during the summer season.

Norwegian is also boosting frequency on other U.S.–Spain routes: daily flights from Newark Liberty International Airport to Barcelona and an increase of Los Angeles (LAX) to Barcelona service to six times per week.

“Norwegian is fully committed to the United States and have answered our passengers’ growing demand for more destinations from both New York City and Chicago,” said Matthew Wood, SVP of commercial long haul and new markets at Norwegian. He added that Athens is a welcome expansion to the transatlantic network and that Barcelona’s strong performance since its introduction from the U.S. has justified both the new Chicago route and higher frequencies from New York City and Los Angeles.

These schedule changes reflect Norwegian’s broader strategy to expand transatlantic connectivity by leveraging its Dreamliner fleet to connect major U.S. gateways with popular European cities. Travelers can expect seasonal, non-stop options that streamline travel time compared with one-stop itineraries.

The new and increased services are aimed at leisure and business travelers seeking direct transatlantic flights to southern Europe, offering more choices for passengers traveling to cultural, historic and coastal destinations.

Norwegian’s expanded summer network strengthens its footprint across key U.S. departure points and aligns with market demand for convenient, point-to-point air service between North America and Europe.
