Up Norway expands its Arctic Circle Express Train journey for 2024 with a northern extension that includes stops in Lofoten and Narvik.
This 15-night, rail-focused itinerary begins in Oslo, Norway’s vibrant capital known for its contemporary art, striking architecture and design scene. From Oslo the route continues to Bergen, Ålesund, Trondheim, Bodø, Lofoten and Narvik. With Bodø serving as European Capital of Culture in 2024, the trip gains an added layer of cultural interest. Throughout the journey, travelers meet locals, sample regional sea- and farm-to-table cuisine, and take part in immersive activities such as coastal cruises, kayaking through narrow waterways, hiking to Alnes Lighthouse on Godøya Island, and exploring a mix of lively cities and tranquil small towns.

In Lofoten, travelers discover remote fishing villages, dramatic coastal scenery, opportunities for Arctic surfing and notable international art collections. From there the journey continues to Narvik, where a private guided tour of the War Museum offers context on World War II events that shaped the region. A ride on the Narvikfjellet cable car provides sweeping panoramic views over the town, fjords and surrounding mountain ranges.
The centerpiece of the itinerary is the rail experience itself, which includes three of Norway’s most spectacular railways: the Flåm, Rauma and Ofotbanen lines. The Flåm Railway, an engineering achievement and Europe’s steepest train line, descends 2,828 feet from mountain to fjord. The Rauma Railway winds through the dramatic Romsdalen valley, offering remarkable scenery at every turn. The Ofotbanen runs entirely above the Arctic Circle, showcasing rugged peaks and cascading waterfalls across an unforgettable Arctic landscape.

Accommodations along the route are carefully selected to complement the landscapes, ranging from boutique hotels with glacier views to cozy traditional fishermen’s cabins. Beginning in 2024, guests can also choose to stay at the new Basecamp Narvik located in the Narvikfjellet mountain area, adding a contemporary mountain-lodge option to the experience.
The extended Arctic Circle Express Train journey balances scenic rail travel, cultural highlights and authentic local encounters, making it an appealing choice for travelers who want to explore Norway’s fjords, islands and Arctic reaches by rail.
