Maui Named Home to Hawaii’s Most Expensive Hotels

Maui has long been known as Hawai‘i’s priciest island, whether you’re buying groceries or booking a sunset cruise. A recent survey by CheapHotels.org confirms that Maui also commands the highest lodging rates among Hawaiian destinations.

The study compared the lowest available double-room rates at 16 destinations across the islands for the period of December 23–28. Results were limited to hotels with at least a three-star rating and properties located near the beach to ensure comparable options.

Wailea, on Maui’s south shore, came in first with an average rate of $412 per night, making it the most expensive Maui neighborhood in the survey. Princeville, a resort community on Kaua‘i’s north shore, ranked second, with average winter holiday rates around $378 per night. At the other end of the spectrum, Hilo on the Island of Hawai‘i offered the lowest average price — about $139 for the least expensive double room during that holiday window. Honolulu, the state capital, also appeared toward the lower end of the list.

This snapshot reflects peak-season pricing around the winter holidays and focuses on beachfront, mid- to upper-tier hotels, so rates can vary widely by travel dates, property amenities, and booking sources. Travelers planning a holiday visit should compare dates and lodging categories to find the best value for their needs.
