Luxury Resort Opens at Hegra UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Hegra — also known as Mada’in Salih — in Saudi Arabia is home to the archaeological remains of the Nabataean Kingdom, including 111 ancient tombs, many richly decorated. Set amid these remarkable ruins, The Chedi Hegra occupies the historic footprint of the Hegra Train Station in AlUla, offering visitors a chance to experience this cultural landscape while staying in exceptional luxury.

“The opening of The Chedi Hegra represents a significant moment in the ongoing development of AlUla as a must-visit heritage and cultural destination,” said Phillip Jones, Chief Tourism Officer, Royal Commission, AlUla. “This property, conceived from the ruins and romance of one of history’s most significant rail routes, offers visitors the rare opportunity to experience the UNESCO site of Hegra at all the most magical hours. This boutique hotel embodies AlUla’s vision to be a leading tourism destination that prioritises sustainable place-making while preserving the region’s culture and natural beauty. We are excited to see The Chedi Hegra become an integral part of AlUla’s journey.”

Managed by General Hotel Management Ltd., The Chedi Hegra comprises 35 guestrooms, suites and villas, each designed to highlight views of the surrounding desert and dramatic rock formations. Architectural details incorporate original stone walls, private terraces and plunge pools, blending modern comfort with local heritage.

Dining at The Chedi Hegra focuses on regional ingredients and Mediterranean influences. Prima Classe serves all-day dishes that highlight locally sourced produce and flavors. After sunset, the space becomes Golden Hour Lounge, where guests can dine while admiring Locomotive 964, a restored 1906 engine produced by Arnold Jung Lokomotivfabrik. Al Mahattah Lounge offers high tea and international selections, accompanied by performances from the hotel’s resident storyteller, Rawi.

Guests can engage in immersive culinary experiences, including workshops on coffee brewing, roasting and cup decoration, enjoying a curated selection of authentic Saudi coffees. These hands-on sessions add context to the local food culture and connect visitors with regional traditions.

New dining experiences announced for this year expand the hotel’s culinary program. Al Mokhtasar will present themed feasts such as the traditional “Madfoon,” paired with live entertainment and storytelling for a celebratory, intimate atmosphere. Al Qala’ah will feature private dining rooms, a rooftop and a terrace with panoramic desert views, while Al Mawrid will offer fine dining beneath the stars for memorable evening meals.
