For many, Yellowstone National Park still conjures nostalgic images, but the park’s historic Lake Yellowstone Hotel has been transformed by an extensive renovation that blends modern comfort with preserved character. Xanterra Parks & Resorts, the hotel operator, invested $10 million in a two-phase restoration of the 122-year-old property, with the first phase now complete. Throughout the project, careful attention was paid to maintaining the hotel’s historic charm while making necessary structural and aesthetic improvements.
Original architectural features were carefully restored: the historic window frames and trim were brought back to life, original floors and ceilings were replaced where needed, and a restored bellhop call box was returned to its original place behind a newly installed bell porter desk. Structural upgrades were also implemented to better protect the building against the region’s seismic activity, ensuring the hotel remains both beautiful and safe for years to come.
The renovation refreshed several public spaces that form the heart of the hotel experience. The main lobby has been rejuvenated and now houses a welcoming bar. Adjacent, the elegant Sun Room and the 250-seat Lake Hotel Dining Room have been updated to enhance guests’ comfort while preserving their historic ambiance. Live piano and string music are featured in the lobby and Sun Room each evening, adding a refined, relaxing atmosphere for guests after a day exploring the park.
Guest accommodations received significant upgrades as well. In the west wing, 38 guestrooms were modernized, and eight of those rooms were specifically reconfigured to be accessible for guests with mobility challenges. Upstairs, the presidential suite was refreshed and four new suites were added. Each new suite features a king bed, a sleeper sofa, a separate living area and a wet bar; several also include deep soaking tubs—ideal for relaxing after a long day spent enjoying Yellowstone’s natural wonders.
The project is being completed in phases to minimize disruption to visitors. With the first phase finished, the remaining work is scheduled to begin after the conclusion of the summer 2014 season, ensuring the hotel’s full restoration will be completed while continuing to welcome guests throughout the process.
