Lufthansa has unveiled renderings of a redesigned business-class seat that will debut on its Boeing 777-9 aircraft beginning in 2020. The new cabin concept focuses on enhanced privacy, improved comfort for side sleepers, and greater convenience for every passenger.
According to the airline, the business-class layout will include dedicated shoulder zones designed specifically for passengers who prefer to sleep on their side. The seat design also features larger personal screens and ensures direct aisle access for every customer, addressing a common complaint about the current configuration where some window seats require stepping over another passenger to reach the aisle.
The carrier is scheduled to take delivery of 20 Boeing 777-9 jets between 2020 and 2025. Lufthansa’s planned cabin arrangement for these aircraft uses a combination of 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 seating across the business-class cabin. This layout guarantees that every passenger will have an unobstructed path to the aisle, a significant upgrade in both privacy and accessibility compared with the airline’s existing business-class offerings.
Boeing has previously published technical specifications and recommended seating plans for the 777-9, and Lufthansa’s new design appears to align with those guidelines while tailoring features to the airline’s premium customers. The refreshed seats aim to balance personal space with practical amenities—larger monitors for in-flight entertainment, improved storage and charging options, and thoughtful ergonomics intended to reduce disturbance between neighboring seats.
Beyond individual comfort, the configuration offers operational advantages by simplifying boarding and movement within the cabin. With all passengers enjoying direct aisle access, cabin crew can move more freely to serve meals and attend to passenger needs, and travelers can enter and exit their seats without inconveniencing others.
