Lufthansa Introduces Premium Economy: What to Expect and Perks

Comfortable new seats and up to 50 percent more room create a new travel experience at an affordable price

Lufthansa’s new Premium Economy Class is now available to book and will enter service beginning in December 2014, initially on the Boeing 747-8. The new seats will be installed across the long-haul fleet over the following twelve months. According to Jens Bischof, Member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board responsible for Sales, Product and Marketing, “Our Premium Economy Class will create a completely new travel experience that combines affordability with greater comfort. The seats offer up to 50 percent more room than Economy Class and will position us in a premium segment within the international competitive environment.”

50 percent more room and precise German engineering
The Premium Economy seats were developed in collaboration with müller/romca Industrial Design in Kiel and manufactured by ZIM Flugsitz. Depending on the aircraft, seats are up to 1.2 inches wider and provide greater privacy. Each seat features a wide armrest and a center console, creating roughly 3.9 inches more lateral space. The backrest offers increased recline and a seat pitch of 38 inches yields significantly more legroom. Overall, passengers enjoy about one-and-a-half times the space of Economy Class. Practical in-seat features include a bottle holder, an electrical socket and multiple storage pockets to keep personal items organized during the flight.

Enhanced services for Premium Economy passengers
Premium Economy passengers receive a higher baggage allowance—two items of up to 50 pounds each—allowing twice the free luggage compared with Economy Class. For an additional fee, passengers may access the Lufthansa Business Lounges prior to departure. Onboard, Premium Economy service begins with a welcome drink and each passenger finds a complimentary water bottle and an amenity kit at their seat. Meals are presented on menus tailored to the class and served on porcelain tableware. Each passenger has a personal touchscreen monitor embedded in the seat in front; screens measure 11 to 12 inches, at least 2 inches larger than Economy screens on many aircraft. The entertainment system can be controlled via touchscreen or a handheld remote that also functions as a game controller. A broad selection of newspapers and magazines further complements the in-flight entertainment offering.

Cabin layout, capacity and attractive pricing
Premium Economy is configured as a distinct, clearly identifiable cabin located between Business and Economy Class. Depending on the aircraft type, the cabin will include between 21 and 52 seats. Installation of the new class will proceed gradually, sub-fleet by sub-fleet, beginning this autumn and completing in summer 2015. Ticket prices for Premium Economy will be set closer to Economy fares than to Business Class, offering a value-driven step up in comfort.

Part of a broader service improvement campaign
The introduction of Premium Economy complements a series of enhancements Lufthansa is implementing across cabins and ground services through 2015. Along with new interiors, the program improves onboard and ground-level services to reinforce the airline’s commitment to hospitality and attentive service.
