Residence by Etihad sounds like a luxury hotel brand, but it is far more: a three-room private cabin aboard a commercial airliner. Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, has introduced The Residence, an exclusive forward upper-deck cabin available on its Airbus A380 fleet. Designed as a private-jet–style environment, The Residence provides a living room, a separate double bedroom and an en suite shower room, and can accommodate single or double occupancy. Guests traveling in The Residence also benefit from a dedicated personal butler.
The Residence was revealed at a global media launch in Abu Dhabi on May 4 and is scheduled to debut on Etihad’s London route in December. The offering is part of a wider strategy to elevate inflight experiences and fulfill the carrier’s commitment to “transform air travel and make every guest journey a remarkable one.”
James Hogan, president and CEO of Etihad Airways, said these private living spaces will set new benchmarks for product and service in commercial aviation and change passengers’ expectations of onboard comfort and luxury. He emphasized that Etihad’s A380 and Boeing 787 fleets will deliver highly advanced cabins while meeting weight, range and cost objectives at the airline’s planned seat counts. That balance, he noted, enables Etihad to offer distinctive, high-quality products across cabins while remaining competitively priced.
The Residence represents a significant step in premium travel, blending the amenities and privacy of a private suite with the operational scale of a leading international airline. Its separate living area allows guests to relax or entertain, the full double bedroom provides a restful sleeping environment, and the onboard shower suite offers freshening options rarely found on commercial flights. The inclusion of a personal butler enhances the bespoke service, catering to dining preferences, personal requests and a tailored onboard schedule.
By introducing these highly personalized spaces, Etihad targets ultra-high-end travelers seeking privacy, comfort and luxury without chartering a private aircraft. The Residence also complements the airline’s broader cabin innovations across first, business and economy classes, reflecting a focus on differentiated experiences for varied traveler needs. Passengers flying in other classes benefit from advances in cabin design and service that flow from the airline’s investment in top-tier products.
With its planned London launch and a global rollout strategy, The Residence is intended to attract discerning customers on long-haul routes where elevated comfort and privacy are most valued. The facility’s design and service model highlight a trend among some carriers to create distinctive, highly personalized offerings as a way to stand out in a competitive market. For travelers for whom space, service and exclusivity matter most, The Residence positions Etihad as a leader in ultra-luxury commercial travel.
