Puglia is home to Castello di Ugento, a 17th-century castle whose history stretches back nearly 900 years. Situated in the town of Ugento in Salento, the castle stands as an important cultural and historical landmark for the region. The owning family, in collaboration with the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism, is revitalizing the property and converting the magnificent structure into a luxury boutique hotel that will also serve as a cultural, gastronomic and oenological center for Puglia.
The restored estate will host rotating art exhibitions, guided historic tours and a dedicated culinary institute of nearly 3,000 square feet where chefs and guests can study and celebrate regional cuisine. In April 2016 the property planned to open nine thoughtfully designed suites alongside a luxury spa and a gourmet restaurant. Guest rooms are set within easy walking distance of centuries-old gardens and orchards that remain productive, offering visitors a serene and authentic backdrop.
Although the castle emphasizes traditional charm and local heritage, it also provides modern comforts and technology expected at high-end properties, ensuring a seamless blend of historic atmosphere and contemporary convenience.
The small town of Ugento invites exploration beyond the hotel grounds. Visitors can discover Roman and Greek ruins, enjoy the nearby Ionian Sea and explore the traces of past empires and crusading history — many sites accessible by bike and ideal for day trips through the surrounding landscape.
