Abu Dhabi Airports has partnered with global IT supplier SITA to modernize the passenger experience using current travel technologies. The investment in SITA’s solutions supports Abu Dhabi International Airport’s plan to expand capacity and handle up to 45 million passengers by 2017.
The rollout covers all three terminals and focuses on operational efficiency and a consistent, seamless journey for passengers. Key components of the SITA deployment include AirportConnect Open, which lets airlines share check-in counters, self-service kiosks and boarding gates, and BagManager, which provides near real-time baggage tracking to reduce mishandling and improve turnaround times.
By standardizing systems across terminals, the airport aims to streamline passenger flow, shorten wait times at check-in and boarding, and improve baggage visibility for both airlines and travelers. Shared check-in areas and kiosks enable better use of space and staff, while integrated boarding-area technology supports smoother gate operations during peak travel periods.
“Abu Dhabi International Airport continues to record strong passenger growth, and we are investing in facilities and technology that will allow us to accommodate projected increases,” said Ahmad Al Haddabi, chief operations officer, Abu Dhabi Airports. “To deliver this, we need a reliable IT partner such as SITA to provide integrated, one-stop solutions across the airport.”
The upgrade also positions the airport to support future digital services and automation initiatives. With modern platform-based infrastructure like AirportConnect Open, airlines and ground handlers can introduce new self-service features, mobile integrations and operational dashboards without lengthy bespoke development. BagManager’s tracking capabilities further support customer-facing notifications and more accurate baggage reconciliation.
For travelers, the combined improvements are expected to mean faster, more predictable journeys through check-in, security and gate boarding, as well as greater confidence in baggage handling. For airlines and airport operators, the benefits include improved resource utilization, reduced delays related to baggage issues, and better data to inform operational planning.
As Abu Dhabi International Airport prepares for higher passenger volumes, investing in proven technology partnerships and scalable systems helps ensure the airport can maintain service quality while growing capacity. The collaboration with SITA represents a strategic step toward a more efficient, passenger-focused airport experience across all terminals.
