India’s New Bullet Train Will Run Underwater — What to Know

India is planning a high-speed bullet train that will include a notable underwater section.

The new railway is proposed to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad, with the submerged segment running between Thane and Virar.

The Economic Times reports that Indian authorities are preparing for what would be the country’s first bullet train. If completed, the service could cut current travel time from about seven hours to roughly two hours.

Key prerequisites for the project include extensive geotechnical and soil testing to ensure the ground can support the required infrastructure, along with securing financing. Japan has reportedly agreed to finance a significant portion of the estimated $14.5 billion cost, covering around 80 percent of the total.

Comprehensive soil investigations and related studies are planned before any tunneling or underwater construction begins, to confirm safety and feasibility and to guide engineering decisions.
