Glass artist Dale Chihuly is celebrated for his pioneering blown-glass sculptures and large-scale installations. Trained at the Rhode Island School of Design and with hands-on experience at the Venini glassworks in Venice, Chihuly has created works in a wide range of sizes and formats that appear in more than 200 museum collections worldwide. He co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington, and his monumental installations have been exhibited at institutions such as the Tower of David Museum in Israel and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Chihuly’s long-standing interest in garden and greenhouse settings inspired his Garden Cycle series, first shown at Chicago’s Garfield Park Conservatory in 2001 and later displayed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This season the series arrives in the desert: Chihuly in the Garden at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, presents a selection of vibrant glass works integrated with the garden landscape. The exhibition, presented by JPMorgan Chase, opens November 10 and runs through May 18, 2014. Daily viewing sessions are offered in three time blocks: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., 12:00–4:00 p.m., and 4:00–8:00 p.m.
In addition to daytime viewing, the garden will host Chihuly Nights, a series of evening events featuring a cash bar and live DJ. These special nights are scheduled from 8:00 p.m. to midnight on March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, and April 5, 12 and 19. Reservations are required for Chihuly Nights.
