Incheon Airport Announces Opening Date for New Terminal

Incheon International Airport has announced the opening date for its new Terminal 2 (T2). Operations are scheduled to begin on January 18, ahead of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the opening of the Olympic Village on January 30. The expanded facilities are intended to handle athletes, officials and other visitors traveling through Incheon for the Games. It is estimated that roughly 20 percent of the expected 300,000 Olympic-related travelers will pass through Terminal 2.

T2 will serve carriers in the SkyTeam alliance, including Korean Air, Delta Air Lines, Air France and KLM. Other airlines such as Asiana Airlines will continue to operate from Terminal 1. Terminal 2 functions independently of Terminal 1, offering its own check-in areas, security lanes and customs facilities. The terminal features upgraded technology, expanded self-service check-in counters and guide robots. According to Chung Il-young, CEO of Incheon Airport, these enhancements reduce passenger waiting times by about 10 minutes.

The addition of Terminal 2 raises Incheon Airport’s annual capacity to 72 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo, up from the previous capacity of 54 million passengers and 4.5 million tons of cargo each year. This increase supports the airport’s ambitions to strengthen its role in regional and global air travel.

An airport spokesperson said the expanded infrastructure positions Incheon to become a core aviation hub in Northeast Asia and to compete for recognition as one of the world’s leading hub airports.

Further expansions of Terminal 2 are planned through 2023. Construction and development costs for T2 so far total nearly 5 trillion won, with an additional 4.2 trillion won reserved for future work. The long-term target for T2 is to reach an annual capacity of 46 million passengers, which would bring the airport’s total annual capacity to approximately 100 million passengers once all phases are complete.
