Hyatt has begun construction on two separate beachfront hotels in San Diego County. The new Joie de Vivre Hotels and Destination Hotels properties mark the largest oceanfront development in the area in a decade and are scheduled to open in late 2020.
Located on an adjacent parcel within a 2.75-acre site in Oceanside, California, the twin properties will together offer 387 guestrooms with direct beach access and many rooms featuring ocean views. Both hotels will include a variety of dining and drinking options, event venues, retail spaces and water-sport amenities, creating a comprehensive beachfront destination for both leisure and business travelers.
The Joie de Vivre hotel blends historic character with contemporary coastal luxury. The property incorporates the restored 1887 Graves House, a local landmark made familiar to many viewers by its brief appearance in the film Top Gun. Surrounding the historic structure, the Joie de Vivre hotel will present a relaxed, upscale atmosphere highlighted by a rooftop pool and bar, casual yet refined dining, and public spaces designed to encourage socializing and waterfront living.
The Destination Hotels property will provide a complementary upscale experience focused on calm, restorative amenities. Guests will find a dedicated pool deck, a full-service spa, a library-style lounge and broad meeting and event spaces suitable for conferences, weddings and other large gatherings. The two properties are positioned to serve different traveler needs while together strengthening Oceanside’s appeal as a modern coastal hub.
Developed by S.D. Malkin Properties, the project is intended to catalyze further investment and development across downtown Oceanside. “We’ve had a longstanding, profound commitment to not only this project but also to furthering the transformation of Oceanside in northern San Diego County,” said Jeremy Cohen, director at S.D. Malkin Properties. “We’re thrilled to see our vision come to fruition and to bring a world-class beach destination to downtown Oceanside that will continue to evolve the city.”
When complete, the two hotels are expected to enhance local tourism by offering a range of accommodations and amenities designed for couples, families and business travelers. Immediate beach access combined with ocean-view rooms will make the properties attractive for weekend getaways and extended stays alike. The mix of dining, retail and recreational options on site will create a convenient, walkable environment for guests and residents.
Beyond guest amenities, the development aims to support the local economy by creating construction jobs during the build phase and hospitality jobs once the hotels open. The event and meeting facilities are likely to attract regional conferences and social events, contributing to year-round visitation rather than a strictly seasonal influx.
The plan emphasizes creating a cohesive beachfront district where architecture, public spaces and services work together to enhance the coastal character of downtown Oceanside. Rooftop amenities, thoughtful landscaping and restored historic elements such as the Graves House are intended to balance modern comforts with local heritage, providing a sense of place that reflects the city’s maritime history.
As construction progresses, more detailed information about room types, restaurants, spa treatments and event packages will be released. For now, the project represents a significant investment in Oceanside’s waterfront and a clear signal that the city aims to attract visitors seeking quality beachfront accommodations and a vibrant downtown experience.
