Sold! Cathay Pacific is exploring an online auction platform that would allow passengers to bid for seat upgrades. The initiative aims to improve load factors by offering one-cabin upgrades—either to premium economy or to business class—through competitive bidding before departure. Similar to auction sites, customers would submit bids for an upgrade; successful bidders would be notified and charged four days before the flight.
Some frequent flyers have expressed concern that complimentary upgrades could be reduced if auctioned upgrades become common, particularly on flights where economy cabins are full. Currently, complimentary upgrades are a perk for members of the airline’s frequent-flyer program, the Marco Polo Club. A Cathay Pacific spokesperson said, “We are examining new initiatives that will allow us to offer passengers, including our Marco Polo Club members, different ways to get an upgrade. At this stage the project is still in the study phase.”
The proposed auction system would give travelers an additional option to secure a better seat while allowing the airline to more effectively manage inventory and revenue. Bidding would take place prior to departure, giving passengers the chance to request an upgrade at a price they choose, and providing the carrier with clearer visibility of potential demand for premium cabins. If implemented, the process would be transparent: passengers who win bids receive confirmation and payment instructions several days before their flight.
For passengers who value guaranteed upgrades or who earn upgrades through loyalty status, the airline’s existing upgrade policies and elite benefits would remain important considerations. Cathay Pacific would need to balance auction-based upgrades with existing practices to maintain service expectations for frequent flyers and to avoid diminishing valued perks.
As the airline continues to study the concept, travelers and loyalty members can expect further announcements if Cathay Pacific moves forward with a pilot or rollout. Until then, the auction remains a potential option among other strategies the carrier is examining to enhance passenger experience and optimize cabin utilization.
