Air travel has entered a new era in which onboard WiFi quality plays a major role in passengers’ choices. Honeywell’s third annual Passenger Connectivity Survey found that about three out of four travelers would switch airlines to get faster, more reliable internet access during a flight. The study also revealed widespread dissatisfaction with current in-flight connections: only 22 percent of respondents described their most recent experience over the past year as “extremely reliable.”
Frustration with poor WiFi is already affecting loyalty. Twenty-one percent of travelers said they abandoned an airline they once favored because of subpar internet service — a share that has increased since 2014 as passenger expectations for in-flight connectivity continue to rise. The majority of respondents want internet performance comparable to their home experience, including the ability to stream video without interruptions; 84 percent identified this level of service as a desired standard.
Millennials are driving much of this demand. Compared with other age groups, they place greater importance on consistent in-flight connectivity: 73 percent reported that internet access influences which flights they choose, and many expect a steady online connection throughout their journey. As usage patterns evolve, airlines that invest in faster, more dependable WiFi stand to gain a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining customers.
