Gift shops are a familiar sight in many cities, hotels and attractions, but too often they sell the same predictable items with little connection to their location. A growing number of hotels are changing that by creating shops that reflect local culture and craftsmanship—bringing authenticity and community engagement to every product.

The Fife Arms, Scotland
The Fife Arms prioritizes local makers and artisans, operating both an on-site boutique and an online shop so guests can browse at their convenience. As part of its commitment to the creative life of the Scottish Highlands, the hotel commissions seasonal collections from Aberdeenshire craftspeople.
Artisans such as Helen Jackson, a basket-maker based in Aberdeenshire, supply distinctive, handcrafted pieces sold in the shop and online. Weaver Araminta Campbell created the bespoke tweed and tartan that feature across the hotel’s interiors, staff uniforms and retail items. Her handwoven textiles—cashmere blankets, picnic baskets and dog coats—use local materials and traditional techniques, showcasing regional craft and design.
