Hotel Lighting That Helps Guests Sleep Better

IHG Hotels & Resorts commissioned a global study that found lack of sleep is a major concern for travelers. Four in five people surveyed said they have difficulty sleeping while on the road.

On average, business travelers lose roughly an hour of sleep per night when away from home, getting just over five hours of sleep. Factors that contribute include unfamiliar environments, new or unexpected noises, and commitments that keep travelers up later than usual.

Two-thirds of respondents reported feeling more fatigued when traveling. Many rely on music or television to help them fall asleep.

To address this widespread problem, IHG is piloting the portable JOURNI Mobile Task Light from Healthe by Lighting Science. This LED light is designed for travel and adjusts its output to support circadian rhythms: during the day it provides light that promotes alertness and focus, while in the evening it shifts to a spectrum intended to encourage relaxation and sleep.

“With so many travelers experiencing sleep disruptions when they’re on the road, we want to do everything possible to make sure our guests at any one of our 16 IHG Hotels & Resorts brands have a restful sleep while staying with us. We’re excited to be the first hotel company to pilot this technology that uses LED lighting to improve guest sleep, and it’s just one of the many programs we’ve introduced over the years to improve guest experience,” said Brian McGuiness, senior vice president, global guest experience, IHG.

Crowne Plaza Atlanta Airport is the first IHG property to offer the JOURNI Mobile Task Light to guests, providing a simple, portable option for travelers who want to improve their sleep while away from home.
