Hotel Heron Now Open in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia — Lodging Options

Perfectly situated in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, the newly opened Hotel Heron welcomes guests seeking boutique luxury and eclectic dining. The property occupies the former George Mason Hotel building, a landmark first opened in 1926, and its redesign honors that heritage through thoughtful architectural and interior choices.

Washington, D.C.–based Antonovich Associates led the architectural restoration, while Streetsense’s global interior design team crafted the interiors, blending Colonial Revival character with modern comforts and refined details.

“Alexandria is already a thriving city, and we aim to enhance that vibrancy,” said Harry Francis, director of lifestyle at Hotel Heron. “Our goal is for Hotel Heron to become a beloved gathering place for locals — whether they’re celebrating, looking to relax, or meeting people who become friends.”

Inside the Colonial Revival structure, visitors step from the lobby into a library lined with custom bookshelves and adorned with bespoke tapestries. Guestrooms combine classic and contemporary touches, featuring fluted glass panels, plush velvet headboards, Federal-style mirrors and well-appointed bathrooms stocked with premium bath amenities.

To mark its opening, the hotel is offering special packages designed to introduce guests to the property and the city. The “Find Your Flock” package includes two complimentary handcrafted cocktails at the rooftop bar, where sweeping views of the waterfront reinforce the hotel’s sense of place. The “Love, Alexandria” package offers reduced rates on premium rooms, complimentary parking, passes to select museums and water taxi tickets for scenic Potomac River excursions.

Dining and drinking options at Hotel Heron are designed to serve both guests and locals. Francis Hall provides a cozy setting for cocktails, while the Good Fortune rooftop bar offers elevated drinks and panoramic views. KILN, the hotel’s restaurant, focuses on breakfast and dinner with a menu rooted in fresh, regional ingredients — from Olde Salt oysters to Atlantic spotted seatrout — and features a Chef’s Counter where diners can watch the kitchen at work.

“Our beverage menus pay tribute to Alexandria and the greater D.C. area,” said Betty Woodward, director of food and beverage at Hotel Heron. “We celebrate local producers, from peach brandy and gin to farm-fresh herbs used for garnishes. The selection is approachable yet sophisticated, inviting every kind of guest to find a favorite.”

With its historical bones, contemporary design, and neighborhood-focused programming, Hotel Heron aims to be more than a place to stay — it aspires to be a social hub for Old Town, offering warm hospitality, thoughtful design and memorable culinary experiences for visitors and residents alike.
