Hong Kong International Airport Plans Massive SkyCity Development

Hong Kong International Airport has announced plans to build a major development called SkyCity adjacent to Terminal 2. The large-scale complex will occupy approximately 668,000 square meters and will include a hotel with between 450 and 750 rooms, together with extensive retail, dining and entertainment facilities.

Jack So, chairman of the Hong Kong Airport Authority, described the project as more than a conventional mall. He said the vision is to establish a new destination next to the airport that captures opportunities in both tourism and business while offering a vibrant lifestyle and family entertainment hub for residents and visitors.

Once complete, SkyCity is expected to attract around 70 million international passengers and local visitors each year. Passenger traffic at Hong Kong International Airport is forecast to grow to more than 100 million people by 2030, supported by regional infrastructure projects such as the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, the Tuen Mun–Chek Lap Kok underwater tunnel and the airport’s three-runway system.

The first phase of SkyCity will open with the hotel and about 195,000 square meters of retail, dining and entertainment space. Phase 1 is scheduled for completion in 2020, marking the initial step toward realizing the broader master plan for the site.

The development aims to blend convenient airport access with a comprehensive mix of leisure, hospitality and commercial offerings, designed to serve transit passengers, business travellers and local families alike. By integrating hotels, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues in a single campus, SkyCity seeks to extend the airport experience into a standalone destination that supports the region’s tourism and economic growth.

Careful planning for phased delivery will allow parts of the complex to open progressively while additional elements are built. This staged approach helps ensure the facilities can respond to evolving passenger volumes and market demand, while maximising connectivity with airport operations and surrounding transport links.

SkyCity’s combination of scale, location and varied attractions positions it to become a major hub for activity at the airport precinct. The project is presented as both a commercial opportunity and a public amenity, providing new hospitality capacity, expanded retail choices and entertainment options for visitors and residents in the coming years.
