Arrival/Check-In: We often arrive from the airport around 9:30 a.m. without expecting an early room, yet at the Grand our hopes were rewarded. Barely five minutes after stepping out of the taxi we were standing on our third-floor balcony overlooking Oslo’s broad, tree-lined Karl Johans Gate. The welcome was seamless and swift—no lengthy name searches and our arrival package appeared without prompting—so we barely registered the elegant lobby with its grand staircase, curated art and comfortable seating.
Guest Quarters: Our deluxe room was generously sized without feeling ostentatious, centered on a king bed dressed in high-thread-count sheets and individual down comforters. Each side of the bed featured a lamp on a large nightstand and an adjustable reading spotlight. The layout provided ample space for a wide desk, two comfortable armchairs and a small table. Large windows opened to a modest balcony suitable for taking in the view; heavy curtains ensured restful sleep during June’s extended daylight hours. Decorative touches—a crystal chandelier set in a carved ceiling medallion and three watercolor fashion sketches—added quiet elegance. The closet contained fixed wooden hangers, an iron and board, two soft terry robes, cushioned slippers and a luggage rack. The bathroom was compact but well-appointed, with a deep soaking tub and a glass-enclosed shower stocked with L’Occitane amenities.
Services/Amenities: The concierge team was attentive, consistently remembering names and preferences and offering reliable directions. Breakfast presented an impressive assortment of fresh fruit, pastries and breads, hot entrées and a broad selection of smoked and cured salmon, pâtés, cold cuts and fine cheeses. I appreciated being able to choose from eight varieties of loose tea to start the day. The Grand Café is a lively lunch and tea destination in Oslo, its murals recalling famed patrons such as Henrik Ibsen and Charles Munch. We dined in the recently opened Palmen restaurant, set within the hotel’s refined palm court, and enjoyed one of the most memorable meals of our trip. The hotel also offers a full-service spa, a birch-lined pool for guests and a distinctive women’s floor featuring rooms designed by notable Norwegian women.
The Experience: The hotel’s location is excellent—on Oslo’s premier shopping street and within easy walking distance of theaters, museums and the city’s newer arts district. This well-maintained grand hotel has modernized thoughtfully while preserving its timeless grace and charm.
